The best lessons don’t arrive in a meeting

They arrive over a cup of Karak. On a long flight. In a quiet word from someone who has already walked the road you’re on. That is how wisdom actually travels: not as a lecture, but as a story told by someone who has been there.

So that’s how we built this book. I asked people I respect, people who have carried real weight and learned real lessons, to write down one thing they wish someone had told them earlier. One after another, they said yes. CFOs and HR directors. Founders and board members. Professors and coaches. From Bahrain and the Gulf to England, Ireland, the United States, and New Zealand.

Here’s the thing: they don’t study managers. They are managers. And they wrote every chapter the way they’d say it to you across the table.

What’s keeping you up at night?

Don’t read this book from page one. Start with your problem.

  • Inherited a team that has stopped getting better? Start with Better by 1%.
  • Your best processes still fail you? Read The Checklist Won’t Save You.
  • Take yourself too seriously? Laughing Matters is your chapter.
  • Standing at the edge of leaving a safe job for your own venture? From Corporate Success to Entrepreneurial Purpose was written for you.

That’s a sample. There are twenty-two in all.

“Strategy matters. Systems matter. But organizations rise or fall on the quality of the managers who lead them, day after day.”

Dr. Lulwa Al Mutlaq, President, Bahrain Management Society, from the Foreword

Meet the people behind the pages

Every chapter ends with the author’s name and how to reach them. Use it! Tell them what their chapter did for you. Invite them to speak to your team. The chapter is the start of the conversation, not the end of it.

More than a book!

The aim of this book was never to boast about what we have achieved. It was to boost what you can achieve.

On Management is one step in a mission to graduate a thousand authors from Bahrain and beyond, and to put real practitioner knowledge into the hands of readers everywhere. When you read these chapters, you’re watching twenty-three professionals become published voices. How about that? By reading, you’re part of it.

And if one day you find you have lessons of your own worth passing on, write them down. Someone behind you is just beginning their climb.
